Swapnet for April 11th, 2004

Easter Early-Risers and Rolling Stones,

Record Low temps and lots of rain here in Central Texas over the past few
days dampened some outdoor activities but there were a few Easter-egg hunts going on.
Lori and I hope you all made it thru Lent had a great Easter.

Club meeting this Tuesday at ARL 10,000 Burnet. Topic- Rick KD5ABM will bring a
Time-Domain Reflectometer. He will discuss the units operation and "sweep" some RF
gadgets for loss and frequency response. Bring your RF switches, dummy loads, etc
for a little RF evaluation!

Some sad news to report. Dan K5IQZ has become a Silent Key. He was a big part
of the Texas Traffic Net and will be missed.

MS150 is rapidly approaching! Austin Hams are being called upon to staff a few
breakpoints and traffic intersections along the Bastrop-Austin route.
Our main involvement will be April 18th- Sunday morning thru mid-afternoon.
You'll need a decent ~25 watt mobile radio with a gain antenna or erect a portable
station with a high antenna. Duties include contacting Breakpoint staff, relaying info
on supplies and other race details.

If you can help, please contact one or all of the following:
Austin- Mike Lay n5ptn@texas.net, Jeff N5MNW@arrl.net 255-6753
Houston- Mike Hardwick N5VCX@arrl.net 713-771-4625
See- www.houstonhams.org

On Sunday April 25th from 1-4PM, the Kincheonville Amateur Radio Association
will hold a hands-on GPS class and Pot Luck Barbeque in Garrison Park, 6001 Manchaca Road.

From Ray Hulley KD5TFH,
MSET-TX is looking for volunteers to help with communication at the Republic of Texas
Biker Rally going on at the Travis County Expo Center from June 3rd thru June 6th 2004.
We are seeking Tech class or higher amateur radio operators. We need people to staff
our communications center and handle traffic with the EMS, Security, and event staff.
This center will need to be staffed 24 hours a day for the entire event. We are looking
at having two to three operators on duty at all times.

All persons interested in this opportunity may contact me, ray@mset-tx.org with their name,
call sign, and contact information. It would also be to their advantage to advise me of their
preferred volunteer time and date (s). I will do all I am able to accommodate as many people
as I am able to. Shifts will be six hours long. All operators will be given free admission and will
be fed while on duty. There will be other perks that I am unable to elaborate upon at this time
as they are still in the negotiating phase. We are also looking for volunteers to help with our
first-aid station. This requires a current certification with TDH or NREMT at ECA or higher.
MSET-TX operates under the A/TCEMS SOCs at BLS level.

If you're not an ARRL member and are considering it, AARC/ARO will apply $15 towards your 2003 AARC/ARO club dues if you sign up for first-time ARRL membership through the club! Take advantage of 2003 ARRL signup, join ARRL and AARC/ARO simultaneously! Contact John KG5O@arrl.net or Roger W5WIA@arrl.net for more details.
