October 20th , 2002

PLEASE NOTE CHANGE OF MEETING PLACE & TIMES!
Furr’s Cafeteria 2525 W. Anderson Ln. 7-8:30PM Come early, eat and visit!

Broadband Brigade,

Lots of contacts were heard this past week on the 146.94 and 444.1 Echolink connections. Roy WA5YZD and Joe N5SMN’s connections have been active, connecting the Austin area to both local and exotic places. It’s very much like 10m FM, where signals from unpredictable regions are strong and clear most of the time. Now, all we need for a realistic HF experience is computer-simulated static and QSB!

Lori got our Echolink running and made a contact to WB5NFC in Mountain Home, Ark., very near her parent’s place. He has a 2m simplex connection that we may “phone home” on during 2003’s Dayton trip.

I have some feedback from at least one JOTA deployment: N0XUR’s station in Round Rock supported around 35 scouts, 15 cubs and even 2 girl scouts. Coolest contact was Scout HQ in Mexico City, Mexico. Second best contact was into Manitoba Canada with Troop 40 during their monthly camp out, coldddd! de David N0UXR

Packet SIG meeting Wed. Oct 23rd to post-mortem recent SET deployment.

ARES 5th Tuesday face-to-face meeting Oct 29th at Northcross Furr’s.

Nov 5th ARO meeting- BOD elections!

Nov ARO presentation: A visit to NIST and NTIA: Rick Kirchhof, KD5ABM will cover his recent technical tour of NIST, NTIA, and NOAA at their Boulder Colorado site.
Nov AARC presentation: AM, FM, SSB- Why so different? Jeff N5MNW will highlight the advantages and tradeoffs of the modulation/demodulation techniques, using an allmode Amateur Radio and an HP8921A Communications monitor. We will use a camera and route the images to the video projector for all to see.

To recognize Veterans Day and General Curtis E. LeMay's birthday this year, the Strategic Air Command Memorial Amateur Radio Club (SACMARC) Will be operating KØGRL on November 11th, 2002 from 1200 hours to 2400 hours Zulu (UCT). The station will operate in the General phone bands on or near to the following frequencies ending in 47 (for 1947 when the Air Force became a single entity) 3.947, 7.247, 14.247, 21.347, & 28.347, whichever band seems to be open best to most locations. Also look for us on 51.47MHZ. You should also listen to the 3905 Century Club WAS Net in the evening. Please visit the SACMARC web site at www.sacmarc.org. Contact information and mailing address are listed there also. Please include an 'SASE' with your QSL card. KØGRL is also good in the current call book and on qrz.com. Darwin Piatt W9HZC, President SACMARC.

The newly introduced WR-G303i is the world's first dedicated shortwave receiver on a PC card. It is also the first commercially available receiver where the entire final intermediate frequency stage and an all-mode demodulator are entirely executed in software, running on a personal computer. http://www.winradio.com/home/g303i.htm 73,N2ZVV and N5XWB
